BOTOX® Cosmetic | Skin Resurfacing | Skin Care

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA approved highly purified by-product of a medically grown bacteria which functions differently from filler materials like collagen or micro-fat grafts.

BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily weakens the muscle that is injected. This weakening means the muscle doesn't contract. This relaxes the attached skin and results in a decrease or elimination of overlying wrinkles in order to achieve a younger, rested appearance. BOTOX® Cosmetic alters the chemical transmission of the nerves that stimulate the muscle to contract and produce wrinkles.

It is a simple, effective method that requires no recovery time. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily lessens unwanted expression lines, especially forehead frown lines and smile lines around the eyes. The result typically lasts three to four months.

Some patients feel that subsequent injections produce a result that lasts longer. The resulting effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic is variable in each patient. There is preliminary scientific evidence that BOTOX® Cosmetic may decrease the frequency or intensity of tension headaches. Please contact us today to learn more about how we can help you.

Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing is a delicate procedure always performed by Dr. Singer rather than a staff member. Laser resurfacing and dermabrasion are skin smoothing surgical techniques used primarily for the face. The procedures remove the top layers of the skin and allow for the regrowth of a new, smoother surface. Laser utilizes a high energy light to vaporize the top layers of the damaged skin, while dermabrasion is performed with a high speed electrical "diamond-wheel" to smooth the skin. It is important to understand that skin resurfacing is not a substitute for a facelift, forehead lift, or eyelid surgery. Rather, it is often recommended to enhance the results achieved by other facial surgery.

Laser is beneficial for smoothing multiple fine facial wrinkles and for leveling raised surgical or traumatic scars. The procedure can be performed in selected areas, around the mouth and eyes, or over the total face.

Dr. Singer will discuss the pros and cons of each procedure with you at the time of your consultation and help develop a treatment plan for your individual needs.

Dermabrasion is ideal for diminishing pitted facial scars caused by acne, leveling raised scars, and diminishing lines around the mouth.

Fine wrinkles should be totally removed after resurfacing. Some deeper wrinkles or creases may require further treatment. The degree of improvement of acne scars is dependent on the depth of the scars. If there are a few very deep scars, minor surgery to diminish these scars may be suggested prior to the resurfacing.

Although precision and predictability are major advantages of skin resurfacing, several alternative treatments are available to eliminate or soften imperfections of the facial skin. These lighter resurfacing methods include: Retin-A®, glycolic acid peels (fruit peels), microdermabrasions (Power Peel®), bleaching creams, and skin care. More superficial options, while requiring shorter or no recovery time, may need to be repeated several times to achieve the desired results. Unfortunately, as we age, our skin cells lose the ability to retain moisture and the tissue in the deeper layers of the skin break down and thin. Time, heredity, sun exposure, smoking, and the use of harsh drying agents, such as soap or makeup, all play a role in the developments of the visible evidence of aging including: spots, growths, wrinkle lines, stretched pores, and change in complexion texture. Some of these changes are reversible. Skin Care can help improve these as well as some of the fine lines that plastic surgery alone cannot eliminate.

The Singer Surgical Centre provides an individualized medically planned and supervised non-surgical skin care program that can slow the aging process and dramatically improve the appearance of your skin. This is different from commercial "skin care," which is often nothing beyond a routine application of a series of over-the-counter cosmetic products that may have no therapeutic value.

Skin Care Treatments Can Revitalize and Rejuvenate Your Skin

Medical skin care will help improve your skin texture and tone, correct surface discoloration and blemishes, stimulate cell removal, and rebuild collagen. Skin care is beneficial for women and men:

  • Improving and maintaining healthy skin before contemplating surgery
  • Preparing the skin for surgery
  • Following corrective procedures

Dr. Singer and our licensed clinical esthetician (clinical skin care expert) will develop a treatment program personalized for you that will help make your skin appear healthier and more vibrant. The Singer Surgical Centre utilizes a number of pharmaceutical-grade skin care product lines in order to maximize your benefit and help achieve a smoother improved texture with more uniform color. Our skin care program may include a combination of in-office treatments and home therapy products that include:

BioMedic

Exfoliation, the removal of the top dry layer of skin, occurs each day as a normal process. This pharmaceutical-grade micro-peel is a light lunchtime peel that will assist in accelerating the exfoliation. Depending on the type and concentration of the active ingredients, it may just remove the superficial layer of damaged skin cells, or it may affect the deeper layers of the skin. It is excellent for busy individuals with sensitive skin.

Light Fruit Acid (Glycolic or Lactic) Peels

Alphahydroxy acids (glycolic) topical skin rejuvenation is a superficial peel which assists in more rapid removal of the damaged, dry layer of the skin surface. It helps the deeper skin layer (dermis) retain water like younger skin without excessive irritation, gives the skin a smoother look, and helps the correction of minor wrinkles and pigment spotting. It is many times used in conjunction with other skin care products to enhance the effect. Because the deeper layers of the skin are left intact, a healthier, refreshed appearance is attained with no down time. This is not usually achieved with the lower dosage in most over-the-counter cosmetic products.

Modified TCA Peel

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a medium depth peel which penetrates the skin to stimulate cell renewal and help rebuild elastic tissue and collagen. Healing typically occurs in  2-3 days. There is a light to moderate skin flaking. TCA peels are more aggressive treatments then glycolic acid. The concentration of TCA varies from 20-50% depending on the patient.

Power Peel (Microdermabrasion Treatment)

Microdermabrasion removes the outer dry dead cell layer of the skin, producing a more youthful, healthier, and vibrant appearance. It is precise. There is early scientific evidence that it stimulates production of new younger cells at the base of the skin, and enhances elasticity. A series of treatments in conjunction with an organized program of ongoing skin care will maximize the results with sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion works differently from topical peels, using mini-particles of inert crystals, which gently flow at a high speed via a handpiece over the outer surface of the skin in a manner developed and perfected in Europe. There is minimal discomfort and pinkness, with essentially no required healing time. Most patients return to work immediately with a healthier looking complexion. The skin feels softer and smoother, making it easier to apply makeup. The procedure normally involves a series of four to six treatments at one to two week intervals. Additional treatments for maintenance are advantageous every six to eight weeks. Microdermabrasion is beneficial in achieving the following results:

  • Softening fine lines and wrinkles (not effective for deeper lines)
  • Improving dry thickened areas of skin due to aging and sun exposure
  • Decreasing whiteheads and blackheads from blocked pores
  • Improving blemishes and pigment irregularities

Postoperative skin enhancements: makeup application.
